Lavender oil production capacity in 2016 is calculated to be 317 tons per ha out of which more than half comes from the Dobrich district. It is expected lavender oil production to continue to grow to nearly 350 tons in 2017. Furthermore, the rapid growth in plantation area is likely to be followed by unprecedented boom in oil production. If no major disease spread issue occur, they expect production capacity to reach approx. 600 tons (three quarters of which in Dobrich only), which is almost doubled the 2016 quantity.
Despite the boom in lavender production in recent years, the crop is not new to the country and Bulgaria already has experience in its growing.
The first Bulgarian varieties were created in the 60s of the previous century at the Institute of Rose and Essential Oil Cultures in Kazanlak, and in the 70s and 80s – Hemus, Sevtopolis, Druzhba and Yubileina, which still dominate the varietal structure. The Sub-Balkan has long been a major production area
Bulgarian rose oil is a worldwide symbol of the gentle, feminine, and generous touch of nature. It is a pure organic product, result of the unique geographical and climatic conditions in the Rose Valley and more than 300 years old traditional methods of Kesme cultivation, hand-picking at down and double distillation & extraction. Today because of its superior quality, the Bulgarian rose oil is the most expensive and demanded on the international essential oils’ market.
